Our place is marked by the binoculars. The fire is just 5 kilometres (a smidge under 3 miles) to the north of us. It started up yesterday morning after a dry lightning storm and trundled eastwards over the afternoon.
Today we are blessed with NNW winds up to 50 km/h and temperatures around 40 degrees centigrade (104 F).
Excellent...
Update: We are still here but a thousand hectares of bush has been incinerated. The fire spent a couple of hours at emergency warning level and we were treated to a couple of runs from Large Air Tankers plus our own local pair of crop dusters going back and forth all afternoon. Fire is, of course, still burning and will do unless it is defeated by containment lines or rain. So we may have fun and games yet...

What is this “Fires Near Me” app? I want it so I can be reassured I do not in fact live in Australia.

From the makers of “Deadly Animals Near Me” where the answer is always “Yep.”

Stay safe! Hopefully the terrain slows it down a bit and it doesn’t just jump across the valleys from the high wind.

There is a sister app called ‘Floods Near Me’ as well.
They tried a 'Deadly Wildlife Near Me' but, for obvious reasons, it didn't work.

Everyone got annoyed at the deadly wildlife alarm going off every 2.23 seconds.

The terrain is not that terrainy when it comes to fire behaviour. Our one advantage is that three years of drought has done much to minimise fuel loads in this area by reducing the understorey so the flame heights are apparently quite low (typically about 2ft) unless there’s a patch with a bit more to burn so flames head up 3 metres (10ft)...and even that's comparatively low.

It’s the same reason why Apple’s Dickhead Alarm for iPhone failed...

Well that’s not great. Stay safe out there, and I hope the winds cooperate with not burning your stuff.

Stay safe out there. I sure wish I could send some of today’s heavy rain and low temps here to you all.
